Basic Rider Course
The Basic Rider Course (BRC) was designed by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) for beginning riders of all ages. Once you complete registration with Road America for this instruction you will be provided a computer link to the MSF home site, where you will also register and begin the approximate 3 hour on-line process of working thru all the material of the Rider Handbook, presented to you in an on-line format. This eCourse must be completed before the first day of class, as it involves passing a series of short, periodic Knowledge Tests and then printing your personal Certificate of Completion. That certificate needs to be presented to your RiderCoach when you arrive in order to complete the course. Note – since your certificate expires after 30 days, be sure to complete the on-line eCourse LESS than one month before you are scheduled for instruction here at Road America. In the event you have any difficulties or questions with this preparatory on-line portion of the MSF curriculum, contact them directly at: MSF Basic eCourse
Once at our site, the instruction will continue with approx. 6 hours of classroom activities and discussion, plus 10 hours of practical riding on one of Road America’s 4 MSF-approved safe, controlled off-street ranges, utilizing a provided motorcycle (or scooter if taking the scheduled scooter-only classes) thru our YAMAHA Motor Sports partnership. Upon successful completion of the BRC, students earn a DOT Waiver that allows you to be exempt from the WI MIT (Motorcycle-In-Traffic) road test and promptly obtain your Class M license endorsement from any WI DMV office!
Proper safety gear for practical riding is required and includes:
- Over-the-ankle footwear, with good grips on the soles (heel not to exceed 1.5")
- Long pants (without rips or exposed skin)
- Full-fingered gloves
- Long-sleeved shirt or jacket
- DOT approved helmet and eye protection (full face helmet is recommended.)
Helmets are available for rent with an additional fee and advanced notice.
Classes run rain or shine, bring rain gear in the event inclement weather should occur.
Each class is limited to no more than 12 students.

CUSTOMER SATISFACTION PROMISE: The Road America Motorcycle School is designed specifically to maximize the fun and minimize the risk of motorcycling. With a pass rate of over 96%, our success rate is encouraging. However, on occasion, any participant may have an “off day.” With that in mind, we have created the Customer Satisfaction Promise. In the event a participant fails any one of our MSF-designated courses, they will be allowed to return to retake the full class at a later date for a minimal rescheduling fee of $100. For those that simply need to retake the skills test (riding) portion, a private retest option can also be made available for $80.
Minors:Minors participating in the course MUST have a parent’s or legal guardian’s signature on our Waiver & Indemnification Form. You can take care of this in advance by having it signed by the parent or legal guardian AND NOTARIZED before the class, or a parent or legal guardian MUST be present at the beginning of the first day of class to sign the waiver in the presence of a Road America staff member. No minors will be allowed to participate without the properly completed and signed waiver.
