Basic Rider Course
The Basic Rider Course (BRC) was designed by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) for beginning riders of all ages. This course requires a total time commitment from students of approximately 18 hours. Upon successful completion students earn a Wisconsin Department of Transportation (DOT) Waiver that allows them to be exempt from the Wisconsin Motorcycle-In-Traffic road test. This course is part of the requirement needed to obtain a class M (Motorcycle) license endorsement from any Wisconsin DMV center.
Once enrolled in this course and not more than 30 days prior to the start date of the course students will be required to complete the MSF’s online eCourse, which takes approximately 3 hours of self study time and carries an additional cost of $20.
Following the eCourse completion and once at our site, the instruction will continue with six hours of classroom activities and ten hours of practical riding on one of our controlled off-street ranges utilizing a provided Yamaha motorcycle.
Please note that the Wisconsin DOT now requires the MSF eCourse to be completed before the first day of class as it involves passing a series of short, periodic knowledge tests which build basic knowledge of riding practices*. Upon eCourse completion students will be required to print a certificate of completion which they will need to present to the course instructor upon arriving for the first day of class. Remember this certificate expires after 30 days so be sure to complete the on-line eCourse LESS than one month before course start date. It should also be noted that after successful completion of this course students will be required to pass a 25 question multiple choice knowledge test which is administered at any DMV center.
Proper safety gear for practical riding is required and includes:
- Over-the-ankle boots, with good grips on the soles (heel not to exceed 1.5")
- Long pants
- Full-fingered gloves (preferably leather)
- Long-sleeved shirt or jacket
- DOT approved helmet with eye protection. (Full face helmet is recommended.)
Helmets are available for rent with an additional fee and advanced notice.
Classes run rain or shine, bring a rain coat or poncho in the event that inclement weather should occur.
Each class is limited to no more than 12 students.
For difficulties or questions with the online eCourse please refer to the MSF eCourse frequently asked questions document below document.

*In the event you’d rather not complete the eCourse learning requirement you may opt to attend the Scooter Basic Rider Course (SBRC) where no eCourse completion is presently needed. This course will require a 16 hour commitment split into six hours of classroom activities and ten hours of practical riding. This course will earn the same DOT Waiver and class M endorsement which will permit a rider to operate a scooter or motorcycle in the State of Wisconsin.
