Street Legal Drags at Road America: How to Race Your Own Car
Street Legal Drags at Road America lets you race your own licensed street car, truck or motorcycle on a 330-foot drag strip laid out on the Front Straight. No experience is required. You enter one or more brackets at $10 each, race side by side against similar vehicles in a double-elimination format, and can make as many practice runs as time allows. The 2026 events ran on weeknight and Saturday evenings from June through October, and Road America lists 2027 dates as coming soon.
What Street Legal Drags is
Street Legal Drags is Road America’s evening drag racing program for everyday vehicles. Instead of a full road course, you race in a straight line: two vehicles side by side, each in its own lane, over 330 feet (1/16 mile) on the Front Straight of the 4-mile circuit.
Road America describes it as a safe, controlled environment where you can see what your daily driver or weekend toy can do. You can race in a bracket, make practice or grudge runs against a friend, or simply come out for a night at the track. Each event also includes a Shine N’ Show car show for drivers who would rather show off their vehicle than race it, or who want to do both.
If you have been curious about Road America but are not ready for a full track day, this is one of the simplest ways to put your own vehicle on Road America pavement.
What you can race
Street Legal Drags is for licensed street vehicles only. That includes cars, trucks, SUVs, motorcycles and electric vehicles, as long as they meet three basic rules:
- Licensed for the street. Road America accepts licensed street vehicles only.
- Street-legal exhaust. Every class requires a street-legal exhaust system.
- DOT street-legal tires. Slicks and DOT street slicks are allowed only in Group 1, the Open class.
Motorcycle riders must wear a helmet, long-sleeved clothing, long pants and closed-toe shoes or boots. Passengers must be over 12, with a maximum of two people in a two-door vehicle and four in a four-door.
Pick your bracket
Brackets group similar vehicles so you race against comparable competition. Tech officials assign your bracket before you enter the pits and may move you up if your vehicle does not fit its group, so be upfront about any modifications. The 2026 brackets were:
| Category | Brackets |
|---|---|
| Open | Group 1: anything goes, heads-up start; the only class that allows slicks |
| Bikes | Group 2: Sport Bike; Group 20: V-Twin Cruiser |
| High School | Group 3: high school students (student ID may be requested) |
| Powder Puff | Group 4: female drivers |
| Family Four-Door | Group 6: four-door sedans, all makes except electric |
| Domestic cars | Groups 5 and 7 to 11: power adders, performance street cars by horsepower, and pre-1980 “Detroit Iron” |
| Trucks | Groups 12 to 15: two-wheel and four-wheel drive, gas and diesel |
| Tuners | Groups 16 and 17: OEM and modified four- and six-cylinder |
| SUVs | Group 18: all-wheel drive SUVs |
| EVs | Group 19: all-electric vehicles (EVs may run only in Electric or Open) |
You can enter more than one bracket. Brackets may be combined or split depending on the number of entries, and the order is subject to change. One rule to know: if you win a bracket, you cannot enter that same bracket at the next event, except in the Open brackets.
Cost and registration
Racing is inexpensive. 2026 pricing was:
- Pre-registered racers: $10 per bracket, plus a discounted $10 general admission
- Drive-up racers: $10 per bracket, plus $15 general admission
- Spectators: $15 each; ages 16 and under are free
- Shine N’ Show: free with general admission
You can register in advance online or at the Main Gate on the day of the event. Every participant must complete Road America’s online SpeedWaiver before arriving. Spectators are welcome to bring a blanket or lawn chair, and bleachers are available.
How the evening runs
The 2026 events followed this schedule:
- 5:15 p.m.: Main Gate opens
- 6:15 p.m.: Mandatory drivers meeting
- 6:30 p.m.: Practice and grudge runs
- 7 p.m.: Brackets start
- 8:30 p.m.: Shine N’ Show judging by crowd applause
When it is your turn, you line up in the pre-staging area, where cars are released to the start one at a time. After your run, you stop in the designated area and follow the official’s directions back along the return road. Brackets are double elimination, so one loss does not end your night. Drivers who are eliminated return to the pits.
Practice runs are unlimited as time permits, which makes the event a good place to learn your vehicle’s launch and get comfortable at the start line before the brackets begin.
Rules to know before you go
Road America’s competitor information keeps the event safe and moving:
